‘Star Trek’ Universe Rife With Possibilities, Says Abrams

In a recent interview for the 200th issue of SFX MagazineJ.J. Abrams talked a little about Star Trek, and more specifically Star Trek 2.

While talking to the director, the magazine established that the second Star Trek movie will not be Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan redux, but Abrams did admit that he and other members of his production team were in part inspired by Wrath Of Khan for the first movie–specifically in terms of the chemistry between Kirk and his crew as depicted in the movie being one thing. But when asked what else in the vast Star Trek universe was an inspiration to him for the sequel, the director struggles to nail anything specific down.

“It wasn’t that there was anything in particular that felt like this one thing that has to be in the sequel. The universe Roddenberry created was so vast. And so it’s hard to say there’s one particular thing that stands out as what the sequel must be.

“Which is, on the one hand, a great opportunity, on the other hand, it’s the greatest challenge – where do you go? What do you focus on? But I’m incredibly excited about the prospects”
