Comics Sales To Rise In 2012, Says Diamond CEO

The future of the comics industry remains a big question mark among pros and fans alike. However, Diamond Comic Distributors president and CEO Steve Geppi feels confident that the comics industry will continue to grow in 2012, according to an interview with USA Today.

“Sales of comic books were quite strong in the second half of the year, led by the September launch of DC’s ‘New 52′ comic books, and that positive trend has continued in the months since,” said Geppi. “With a full slate of high-profile new projects scheduled for next year, we are optimistic that comic book sales will increase again in 2012.”

He’s not the only one who feels that way.

In the same article, Marvel Comics president and publisher Dan Buckley agreed with Geppi, also indicating that he hopes new tools such as social media will also help stimulate market growth.

“It’s huge – social media and the way we speak to each other. The opportunities are just fantastic out there,” said Buckley. “Let’s stop talking about how this is going to end because I’ve watched this try to end three or four times already, and it doesn’t end.”

Overall, comic sales saw a year-on-year growth of 1.2 percent in 2011.

The two biggest companies have major events coming this year, with Marvel starting Avengers Vs. X-Men and DC continuing ‘The New 52′ with its ‘Second Wave.’
