In Review: Eternal Law -Episode Four

Synopsis: A whole community unites behind a single mother on trial for the stabbing of her alleged stalker – but Tom feels that there is more to this lonely woman’s story.
Review: Tom kind of comes of age in this episode where he and Zack bump heads over the fate of a mother who they are prosecuting for the murder of her alleged stalker, but when Tom gets a gut feeling that there are extenuating circumstances he goes to Zack for help, but winds up being cut loose from the case.
Even worse for Tom is the fact that he is still trying to deflect the amorous attentions of a legal secretary working in the office, but is unable to handle the situation. Out of fear that Tom may have a sexual liaison with the young woman and thus break the rules and upset the big boss upstairs Mr Sheringham gives the young woman a generous pay off and find her a new job at another legal practice in a different city.
Meanwhile Zack is beginning to get a little confused by the case and is beginning to pick up on what Tom was talking about, but he is also struggling with his love for Hannah.
While in Church listening to some choir music Tom is approached by fallen angel Richard who plants a few more seeds of discontent by telling Tom that all Satan and his side ever wanted for for transparency, but the divine didn’t want that because he wanted human beings to love him unconditionally. This sows more seeds of confusion in Tom who is agonizing over the case and only wants to get at the truth so he can set the mother free of her pain.
Having forced a retrial of the case Zack finds Tom and breaks several laws in a joint quest to get at the truth of the matter, which blows things wide open and leads to the mothers arrest and conviction.
Later on while in the remand cell with the mother Zack takes her anger onto himself by allowing her to break down and articulate it. A little later Tom visits her in her cell and shows his true angelic self to her in order to show her that there is an after life and she will get to see her son again when she goes there.
This was perhaps one of the strongest episodes of the series and gave us a great performance from Ukweli Roach who really had to act his arse off in this episode to convey the many emotional things that Tom was dealing with. He even held his own in a scene stealing performance by Tobias Menzies as Fallen Angel Richard, who gives Tom some food for thought in church and once again shows that he regards human beings as little more than cattle.
