Blu Ray In Review: The Fades

Synopsis: The Fades is a new supernatural horror series by 2011 Royal Television Society Award-winning writer Jack Thorne (the original UK Skins). Iain De Ceastecker (Coronation Street) is Paul, a young man who is haunted by apocalyptic dreams that neither his therapist nor his best friend, Mac (Daniel Kaluuya, Skins, Sucker Punch), can provide answers for. Worse still, Paul has started seeing the Fades – the spirits of the dead – all around him. They’re everywhere but normally can’t be seen, heard or touched – until now. An embittered and vengeful Fade has found a way to break the barrier between the dead and the living. Paul, Mac and their loved ones find themselves in the middle of it all. The worst is only yet to come as the fate of humanity rests in the hands of the two friends who already have enough trouble getting through a day in one piece, let alone saving the world.
Review: I remember when The Fades first premieres here in the UK in the Autumn of last year and to be fare the opening episode got a lukewarm reception by most of the television critics, but the faithful army of viewers that stuck with the show were rewarded.
The series was a supernatural roller-coaster ride with some genuinely scary moments, but also some comic relief from Mac who refferenced a number of television shows from years past. Some of which would probably be lost on modern audiences.
The writing on this series is extremely clever.
The one thing about most fantasy series is that the whole good verses evil thing can be a bit of a cliche, but The Fades does it in such a way that it’s utterly believable and once you buy into the concept you’re totally hooked. At first glance you may think The Fades is just a teen show. Don’t be fooled. The series is done so well that viewers of most ages will likely enjoy it.
In terms of acting we have some great supporting performances from Tom Ellis and Daniela Nardini, and Iain De Ceastecker in the role of Paul does a great job, but the real breakout performance of this show comes from Daniel Kaluuya who puts in a marvelous performances as Pauls geeky friend Mac.
The effects on the series that depict the eery looking Fades are just about right, but not so much that they pull you out of the story.
All in all this is a brilliant show and well worth getting on DVD or Blu Ray.
