One of the more interesting comic book movie adaptations of recent years was RED, which was somewhat of a sleeper hit when it was released in 2010.

The movie was a somewhat dry action comedy that starred Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren and John Malkovich as a group of over the hill Special Ops agents who are forced out of retirement for one more mission.

In a recent report via Hollywood Reporters Heat Vision Blog it was revealed that Dean Parisot has signed up to direct the sequel. Although the Morgan Freeman and Bruce Willis are likely to return. The deals are yet to be signed.

We can only hope that all four actors from the original can be negotiated with for their return to those roles because I still get rather excited by the thought of Helen Mirren wielding a machine gun, which is quite wrong headed of me I know.

The first movie, which was a cinematic adaptation of the popular wildstorm comic book mini series was directed by Robert Schwentke and grossed $200 million worldwide. It gave Summit another franchise on top of its Twilight movies and showed the still-strong viability of older actors such as Willis.

The sequel, which will go before cameras sometime this year has been written by Erich and Jon Hoeber, who wrote the script for the first installment.

Parisot, who beat out a fair few other directors for the job is best known for his work on the science fiction action comedy Galaxy Quest, but his last movie was the mediocre remake of the original mediocre Fun With Dick And Jane, which he did back in 2005. So we can only hope that his work on RED 2 brings him back up to the level of acclaim he got for the work he did on Galaxy Quest.
