Guillermo del Toro is to make a return to his Mexican roots with a new CG animated production of Day Of The Dead, which he’ll produce.

According to Hollywood Reporter the producer is to team with Reel FX in order to make the film, which is to be directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez, the co-creator of a Nickelodeon show named El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera. Del Toro will also ‘present’ the movie, which is also produced by Aaron Berger and Carina Schulze of Chatrone Inc.

The script is written by Gutierrez and Doug Langdale, whose writing credits include El Tigre and many other animated shows.

The script has been described as a Romeo & Juliet-style love story set against the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead.

Music will play a key role in the movie and producers are hoping to snag an international who’s who for the soundtrack.

At present Del Toro is shooting Pacific Rim for Legendary Pictures. The last time he made a Mexican feature was 1993’s Cronos.

Reel FX is run by former ILM exec Ed Jones and former Walden Media CEO Cary Granat. The company concentrates its efforts on CG-animated and effects-driven material and is developing an adaptation of Dark Horse comic Beast of Burden. They are in post production on what will be its first release, Cirque du Soleil’s Worlds Away, which was written and directed by Andrew Adamson and executive produced James Cameron.

Reel FX hopes to released Day Of The Dead in the 2014 movie season.
