In Review: Being Human – 1955

Synopsis: Three visitors travel from afar in the hope that baby Eve is the Saviour and can perform a miracle.
Review: When old werewolf Leo hears a message from the other side telling him to travel to Barry in Wales he gets Vampire Hal and Ghost Pearl to drive him there in the hopes of clapping eyes on the war child.
This episode does a great job of introducing us to Hal and also gives a glimpse into his past hence the episode title being the year that he settled down with Leo and ghost Pearl.
After the dark episode of last week this offers a little light relief in that we get a fair bit of comedy from the initial animosity between Werewolf Tom and Hal upon their first meeting, but the real fun to be had is when Leo takes Annie through a list of things she needs to do in order to make sure Hal doesn’t lose control. The moments in this scene where Pear interjects saying that Annie should keep Hal out of the way of humans, small dogs and budgies would comedy gold, but Kia Ora Orange juice or any other fruit cordial as well. I have to admit I’m curious as to its effects.
This episode also put Annie centre stage, which is something of a first to have her at centre stage because its not really happened to much since the second season. In the episode she improvises some elaborate seance in order to help Leo who is pretty much on his way out, but when the written instructions run out she starts to use a number of pop cultural references that will raise a laugh from pretty much any geek.
By the end of the episode Annie figures out that Pearl who has lived with Leo and Hal since 1955 was very much in love with Leo and helps her come to terms with it so she can cross over to the other side with Leo.
We get a fun bonding scene between Tom and Hal in which Hal talks a store keeper out of shooting Tom. We’ve pretty much learned right off the bat that Leo was very much the werewolf looking after Hal in that he provided the vampire with a routine of sorts in order to help him control his urges.
We get a brief glimpse of future Eve toward the close of the episode, but just what she has planned is not apparent as yet.
To conclude this was a nicely done hour of television and the combination of Hal, Tom and Annie could well be fun viewing as the weeks roll by. Add to this some potential new vampire enemies for them to fight. One of which is apparently familiar with who Hal is.
