In Review: ‘Doctor Who Series 6 Soundtrack’
As great as the writing, the acting and the direction are on Doctor Who, you just have to include how terrific the music is for the show.
Run by Steven Moffat and starring Matt Smith, Who had several of their cast and crew spend some time in the States, and it was up to long-time series composer Murray Gold to make music that fit that happening. Once again, Gold worked with the BBC National Orchestra Of Wales.
The recently released two-disc Doctor Who Series 6 Soundtrack spectacularly mixes pieces that have a “wild west’ feel with what are now the usual Who tunes and melodies. All told, you get 66 musical numbers in this double-disc set. As usual, they vary in length quite a bit.
My favorite of the entire collection is “I Am The Doctor In Utah,” which does just what I thought it would — I could visualize Smith in the cowboy hat as he sat on a car’s hood while talking with the rest of his band of time travelers.
As usual, Gold can deliver everything from creepy, spooky songs as in “The Impossible Astronaut” to high-octane, full-orchestra numbers like “Time Is Moving.”
Other favorites include “Double Doctor,” “Room Of Your Dreams,” “River’s Waltz” and the aptly titled “A Very Unusual Melody.” Can you tell I like a wide variety of music? Apparently, so does Gold.
While those are the ones I particularly liked, you should listen to the rest of the collection to see what ones you enjoy most. Gold really does understand what Who is about, and makes his music fit the adventures of the Doctor very, very well.
Listening to this music reminded me of many sequences that I loved during Series 6, and made me long for the DVDs!
Here’s hoping Gold will be scoring Doctor Who for a long time to come!
