John Severin Passes At 90
Comic book legend John Severin passed away this Sunday, February 12, at his home in Denver with his family by his side. He was inducted into the Eisner Awards Hall of Fame in 2003.
Severin gained fame as an artist on E.C.’s “Two-Fisted Tales” and “Frontline Combat”. He was also one of the five original cartoonists to found “Mad”, which has become a world famous icon of parody.
He later worked for Marvel comics illustrating and inking “The Incredible Hulk” and “Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos”. He later went on to become a stable at “Cracked”, another humor magazine.
He continued to work up until recent years, illustrating the much publicized “Rawhide Kid” series of 2003 written by Ron Zimmerman, where the Kid was revealed to be gay. And last year Severin illustrated a story set in the Hellboy universe, “Sir Edward Grey Witchfinder: Lost and Gone Forever”, a western horror.
