‘Zorro’ To Receive A Science Fiction Make – Over In ‘Zorro: Reborn’

Back in the sixties and seventies science fiction fans were given a scifi twist on classic English outlaw Robin Hood in a animated show called Rocket Robin Hood. Now it looks like another classic hero is to get a similar kind of make-over, but this time in the form of a feature film.
The hero I’m talking about of course is Zorro who by day was known as the wealthy Spanish nobleman Diego De La Vega.
This science fiction take is appropriately titled Zorro Reborn the new film will star Gael Garcia Bernal – and according to the L.A. Times will transport pulp writer Johnston McCulley’s hero created in 1919 into a distant future:
“specifically a desolate and post-apocalyptic one. … In this version, Zorro will be less a caped crusader for justice than a one-man vigilante force bent on revenge, in a western story that has echoes of both Sergio Leone and No Country for Old Men.”
As some have already pointed out. This sounds a little like the Mad Max movies or any number of similar films that populated the 1980s. Of course this isn’t the first time that Zorro has been somewhat re-imagined and it certainly won’t be the last. Over the years Zorro has enjoyed over 40 movies and serials, from the exciting (1998 film The Mask Of Zorro) to the ridiculous (1981′s Zorro, the Gay Blade).
As a fan of Zorro and pretty much most pulp heroes I’m taking a wait and see approach to this movie. As in I hope its good and doesn’t forget about the more humorous aspects of Zorro. As in the “Z,” which was often skillfully carved into the clothing of those he felt were being unjust toward his people.
