IN REVIEW: La La Land Records Has Given Star Trek Fans The Ultimate Soundtrack Collection!
If you are a Star trek fan – and a fan of music and scores (soundtracks) – and more specifically a fan of the original series STAR TREK (running from 1966-1969) sries, then this is the La La Land Records release of STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES SOUNDTRACK COLLECTION is for you! Are you ready?
This CD Collection contains the scores released and unreleased from all three seasons. Cues and cuts used, mixed and reedited in various ways throughout the series. It contains library cues that almost every composer created for the series. It contains the most detailed liner notes of almost every episode and recording session with details of the individual orchestras and musicians themselves. It contains the most amazing images and art work and details of timing notes and specific reasons certain instruments were used and scenes enhanced. It even contains source music and sound effects too! It also contains an amazingly detailed 24-page booklet that describes all the composer, excerpts from interviews and even the history of how the original composers became involved with Gene Roddenberry!
The quality and clarity of each score is amazing. Digitally transferred and made better sounding then when they were originally recorded, these cues and orchestrations are amazingly brilliant and beautiful! With a forward by Tribble writer David Gerald, Executive producers MV Gerhard and Matt Matt Verboys of La La Land Records, did an amazing job or collaboration, research, design and remastering for this collection. I applaud their efforts and detail! You really can’t believe the clarity and crispness of each cue. I won’t even mention of the memories of the show it will evoke, but on their own, it’s an amazing collection to have.
And yes, you hear all the original composers: Alexander Courage (famous for the signature Star trek fanfare and original theme), Fred Steiner, Sol Kaplan, Joseph Mullendore, Gerald Fried, George Duning, Samuel Matlovsky, Jerry Fielding and Wilbur Hatch.
Season One: (5 Discs!): Scores from ‘The Cage’, ‘Where No man Has Gone Before’, ‘The Man Trap’, ‘The Naked Time’, ‘Charlie X’, ‘The Enemy Within’, ‘The Conscience of the King’, ‘Shore Leave’ (one of my personal favorites) and ‘Mudd’s Woman’ are complete scores. ‘The Corbomite Maneuver’, Balance of Terror’, ‘What Are Little Girls Are Made Of’ and ‘City On The Edge Of Forever’ are shorter but contain the cues that were written specifically for that episode. For budgetary reasons, most other music was mixed with these episodes and matched from the other composers based on the scene.
Season Two: (5 Discs!): Scores from ‘Catspaw’, ‘Friday’s Child’, ‘Amok Time’, ‘The Doomsday Machine’, ‘Who Morns For The Adonais?’, ‘Metamorphosis’ (another one of my personal favorites), ‘I, Mudd’ and ‘Return To Tomorrow’ Are complete scores. ‘Mirror, Mirror’, ‘By Any Other Name’, ‘The Omega Glory’, ‘Patterns Of Force’, ‘The Apple’, ‘Trouble With Tribbles’ again are shorter but contain the cues that were written specifically for that episode. For budgetary reasons, most other music was mixed with these episodes and matched from the other composers based on the scene.
Season Three (5 Discs!): ‘Spectre of the Gun’, ‘The Paradise Syndrome’ (another one of my personal favorites), ‘Elaan of Troyius’, ‘Spock’s Brain’, ‘The Enterprise Incident’, Plato’s Stepchildren’ are complete scores. ‘Whom Gods Destroy’, ‘The Way To Eden’, ‘Is There In Truth No Beauty’, ‘The Empath’ Requiem For Methuselah’, ‘And The Children Shall Lead’ and ‘The Savage Curtain’ again are shorter but contain the cues that were written specifically for that episode. For budgetary reasons, most other music was mixed with these episodes and matched from the other composers based on the scene.
This is a limited edition 15-CD box set that features all episode scores as heard in all three original seasons of the landmark sci-fi television series STAR TREK. Listening from the first note to the last note to the very last note on all 15 discs will take you approximately 17.5 hours! That’s how much music you have to listen too! I loved this collection but get it before you can’t anymore! Check it out at www.lalalandrecords.com
