In Review: Merlin – “With All My Heart”

Synopsis: Morgana’s twisted control over Gwen means Merlin must act fast before it gets out of hand.

Review: As written above Merlin must act and after last weeks episode in which Gwen under Morgana’s control damn near got King Arthur killed. It’s high time Merlin and the gang hit back and this is the episode in which they strike a blow against Morgana by getting Gwen back to her old self, but like always its not quite as simple as it sounds.

Nice to see some of the humor back in the series. The last couple of week have been a little lacking, but this week brings back some of the humor. One scene in particular concerning Merlin, Arthur Gaius and Gwen was rather fun and it was more fun in a silent comedy kind of way.

This episode really does a lot for Merlin. We see him deal with a sorceress in a much more sure footed way than he would have in prior series, which in so many ways signals that the series is coming close to its conclusion by the mere fact that we’ve seen a great deal of growth in Merlin as a character.

In essence this episode has everything that has made Merlin so watchable to so many people. So if you didn’t like this particular episode you probably do not like the series very much.

It had everything. It has a quest, it focused on the friendship between Merlin and Arthur without being preachy about it or force feeding it and we even see a throwback to Giaus passing on some wise words to his young apprentice.

And for the lady viewers it has a romance and some lovely scenes toward the end in which Arthur and Gwen renew their love for each other.

Score 5/5
