Is Robert Kirkman the biggest zombie killer of all?
The recent news of Glen Mazzara’s departure as The Walking Dead’s latest show runner to leave the series, shocked the zombie world and the main reasons given for this seemed to be a culture and climate of control from the executive side of the AMC house.
Recently however, another spin seems to be adding to the story behind Mazzara’s departure from The Walking Dead and it would suggest that the hit show’s beloved creator, Robert Kirkman may have more to do with the turmoil behind the set than has previously been shared.
As reported by the Hollywood Reporter, two ardent Mazzara supporters, Shawn Ryan (Producer of The Shield) and Kurt Sudder (Creator of Sons of Anarchy), did indeed criticize AMC and the ways in which they tend to treat their show runners and creative personnel but also had this to say about Robert Kirkman, “. . . is an amazing visual artist and a graphic artist [but] knows very little about TV, and the reins keep going back to him in this process, and he doesn’t know how to run a show.”
While I have nothing but the most ideal image of Kirkman as a creator from my non-industry perspective, other insiders also indicate that Kirkman is rather “proprietry” about The Walking Dead. While another said the following, “I believe Robert wants to maintain a certain amount of his control, and AMC needs Robert for the fan base.”
It seems that Kirkman did apparently have issues with Mazzara, but truth be told it also seems that he was not the only producer who had issue with his vision for the show. It is being suggested that Mazzara’s vision may have had shortcomings during the third season’s second half with sources going so far as to say that the production shut down “several times” because of a lack of material.
This is obviously just one side of the story, but does seem to give a slightly different twist to why Mazzara left the show and in truth does not simply blame one side or another. Typically in conflict resolution, the saying goes, “There is one sides version of the truth, then there is the other sides version of the truth and the actual truth is somewhere in the middle.” I would suspect that this is obviously closer to the truth than the bits and pieces we are getting out of Hollywood, but one thing seems to be gleaming through.
Where vision on a show or major property is concerned, “There can only be one!” as many an immortal knows all too well. If at the end of the day, I had to choose, I would put my money on Kirkman as no one knows the material better than he. Likewise, I think he is in fact a more important part of the equation for AMC, The Walking Dead itself and potentially the fan base as well. So while we really don’t know exactly what happened yet, I am still fine with Kirkman keeping an eye on things!
