Skyfall writers to take on ‘Barbarella’ television series
A number of years ago there was a rumor about a Barbarella remake, which was to be a movie reboot of the classic 1960s film, which revealed a fare bit of Jane Fonda and was the stuff of many a teenage boys dreams.
The 60s movie was pretty much high camp and much of the humor was very cheeky and in keeping with the time, but having watched it recently I find it hard to imagine how you could remake it.
It seems however that Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who wrote the screenplay for last years hit James Bond film Skyfall have found a way, but for a TV series and not a movie.
According to Deadline the two writers who were largely responsible for bringing some credibility back to the James Bond movie are working on a TV version of Barbarella.
Instead of adapting the movie version, which starred Jane Fonda and gave the band Duran Duran their name. This television version will take its notes from the original Barbarella comic books, which were penned by Jean-Claude Forest.
Executive producer is Martha De Laurentiis, the widow of the legendary Dino De Laurentiis, who produced the 60s movie, is producing this series, which would indicate that the television and movie rights have remained with the De Laurentiis family.
Martha De Laurentiis has produced a number of her late husbands projects in recent years, which have included Hannibal, Red Dragon and Hannial rising. She currently serves as an executive producer on the new Hannibal TV series.
Drive director Nicolas Refn is currently set to direct the series, which is great news, but a far as we know he’ll only be directing the pilot.
At present this Barbarella series does not have a Network, but we are hoping that it will get picked up by a Cable network such as HBO or AMC so the writers could use their maximum creativity when it comes to the legendary Excessive Machine (often incorrectly referred to as the orgasmatron – that was in Sleeper), which was in the original comics as well as the film.
