Dave Bautista, former WWE Champion, to be Drax the Destroyer

It has recently been announced that Dave Bautista has been cast as Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s/Disney’s upcoming film, Guardians of the Galaxy.

For those of you unfamiliar with Dave Batista, he is a former bodybuilder that became a WWE Superstar in 2002 and a four time WWE World Heavy Weight Champion before leaving the company in 2010.

(At WWE, he went under the name Batista, instead of his real last name, Bautista.  WWE frequently alters people’s names so that the company can legally control the intellectual property associated with the performer while he or she is with the company.  For instance, current WWE wrestler Daniel Bryan’s real name is Bryan Danielson.)

After leaving the WWE in 2010, Bautista pursued a career in MMA fighting.

Bautista also branched out into the world of movie making – starting with a cameo in 2006’s direct-to-video, Relative Strangers.

Since then he has starred in The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption and The Man with the Iron Fists – a movie directed by Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA and also starring Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu.

Before appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy, Bautista will be starring in the upcoming movie Riddick.

Drax is character that has been around since the early 1970s and gone through a few revamps.

However, starting out as the spirit of a human placed inside a stronger body, Drax has been commonly depicted as an enemy of Thanos.  When human, Drax had a daughter who would grow up to be Moondragon.

Guardians of the Galaxy is set to be released in 2014 and will be directed by James Gunn.
