In Review: Walking Dead ‘This Sorrowful Life’
WARNING . . . Herein lie SPOILERS!!! This week’s Walking Dead episode, ‘This Sorrowful Life’ was one of my favorite episodes this season and that says a lot because I think this season has been one hell of a ride! But just when we were starting to like Merle, just when you were starting to allow yourself to think that this old dog might fit in and learn how to finally play nice, BAM!!!
Merle Dixon, one armed brother to your favorite apocalyptic red-neck; Darryl Dixon, now sleeps with the corpses after being left to become a walker by our much beloved Governor. But what a ride it was and if Merle were a Klingon, last night would have been a great day to die! Merle surely died the death of a warrior and even dare we say as a hero!?
S.O.B.? Yes. Ass#@!*? Definitely. Loving brother, willing to do the dirty deeds that need doing? Absolutely, and that is exactly what we saw Merle do in ‘This Sorrowful Life’, with one exception; Merle redeemed himself if that was at all possible. No one may know and Glenn might be real happy Merle’s gone, but we know don’t we? Under that hard ass red neck venire, Merle Dixon actually had a heart.
I will admit that after last week’s episode and in the beginning of this episode I was beginning to wonder if my favorite show was slipping. I simply DID NOT like Rick and the others actually planning on handing over Michonne and I was seriously questioning the zombie gods. But then Rick and the group’s morality, even as tarnished as this savage world makes it, won out in the end! And to be honest, that is what I needed for Rick and the others to understand! That even in the face of hopeless odds, you do the right thing and you fight for each other! And if that were not enough to redeem your trust in Rick, he announces that everyone once again lives in a Democracy AND Glenn proposed to Maggie . . . awwww!
What I also loved about this episode was the amazing zombie world visions of how things would look. I loved seeing the grass overgrown throughout the episode as too often we have seen well-manicured lawns on this show. But not last night! Michonne’s words of zombie-land wisdom and Merle’s pied piper routine with the zombies following his hot-wired car as he drives slow, drinking a nice bottle of Whiskey. Thoughtful guy Merle is, he even offered some to the dead . . . LOL LOVED IT!!!
This scene was a stroke of genius and you almost thought he might just pull it off didn’t you!? But alas, surely by now we all know that Robert Kirkman is prone to kill off those characters we care for right!? But when Darryl came upon his brother eating the kid from Tyreese’s group, I truly felt for Darryl and what a performance by Norman Reedus!
I simply cannot wait for next week’s season finale of season 3 of the Walking Dead! What will happen to Andrea? Who will survive and who will die! Guess we’ll just have to wait and find out together!
