Joss Whedon and Avengers fans rejoice! ABC has announced its first new series order for next season. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., from The Avengers’ writer/director Joss Whedon (Buffy, Angel,Firefly, Dollhouse).

Clark Gregg reprises his role as erstwhile dead Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films, as he assembles a select group of agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together they investigate “the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary.”

Coulson’s team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), specializing in combat and espionage; Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) pilot and weapons expert; Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), a brilliant techie; Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) a biochemist; and new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet).

Whedon will serve as Executive Producer, co-writer, and director of the series pilot, with pilot co-writers Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, (Dollhouse, Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog); Jeffrey Bell (Angel, Alias); and Jeph Loeb (Smallville)

S.H.I.E.L.D., which stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate, or Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, I another Stan Lee/Jack Kirby creation, is a fictional espionage and secret military law-enforcement agency in the Marvel Universe.

ABC will air a preview of the series during the season finale of Once Upon A Time on Sunday, May 12.
