Ben Daniels leads the names being considered for the 12th Doctor Who
The search is now underway for a 12th actor to embody the BBC’s most famous time lord and become the 12th Doctor Who.
Already several names have sprang up from all media outlets and the current favorite to take on the role is 48 – year old Ben Daniels, who is best known for his role in Law and Order UK, but had a guest role in the final season of Merlin as Triston.
According to SkyBet the actor is top of the list of their contenders with 6/1 odds in his favor. He is being followed closely by Chiwetel Ejiofor at 7/1.
Being Human’s Damien Molony follows with odds of 9/1.
And behind Molony are Homeland star David Harewood and Russell Tovey both have odds of 10/1 with the bookmaker.
Personally out of that list of actors I quite like the idea of Molony as the Doctor due to the fact that he has proved he can do quirky with his Being Human role, but I get the feeling that many people would prefer an older actor after the somewhat youthful Matt Smith.
Matt Smith will leave the role during the Christmas special, which normally airs on Christmas Day, but that date is as yet to be confirmed.
Paterson Joseph – who was widely tipped to be David Tennant’s replacement in 2010 – has odds of 16/1, while Tennant himself has odds of 33/1 for a return to the role.
The tabloid newspapers have been reporting that the BBC could be considering a female Doctor for the 12th incarnation. Broadchurch star Olivia Colman is the female favourite at 25/1.
Executive producer Steven Moffat teased the casting of the 12th Doctor, saying: “A life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again. After 50 years, that’s still so exciting.”
Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson are included by SkyBet with odds of 100/1, and comedian Russell Brand is at 33/1.
Doctor Who returns to our screens on November 23 for a 50th anniversary special starring Smith and Tennant before Smith bows out in the festive episode.
