Robert Downey Jr signs up for next two ‘Avengers’ sequels


Robert Downey Jr has signed a contract with Marvel Studios, which will see him reprise his duel role of billionaire Tony Stark and Iron Man for not one, but two Avengers sequels.

Under the two-picture agreement, Downey will star in Marvel’s The Avengers 2 and Marvel’s The Avengers 3, Marvel announced Thursday.

Joss Whedon will return to both write and direct the the sequel to Avengers Assemble, which was the top grossing film of 2012. Disney and Marvel’s first film, starring Downey, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner, has grossed $1.5 billion worldwide to date.

The Avengers sequel, which is said to include a mix of returning heroes as well as introduce new heroes and villains is set to go into production in March 2014 and open in theaters May 1, 2015.
