Land of the Lost Finds Spencer Milligan after 40 years
After spending a weekend in Texas at Galacticon and having an amazing time, I was privileged to have made a friend of an actress I have long admired, Kathy Coleman, who played Holly Marshall from the hit Saturday 70’s morning television show Land of the Lost. After returning from the convention, one of the articles I could not wait to write was about meeting and interacting with Kathy.
After writing my article ‘Catching up with the Amazing Kathy Coleman’ and to my delight, I actually received a phone call from Kathy herself and the kid in me who watched Land of the Lost spellbound every Saturday morning was giddy with joy. Kathy graciously thanked me for the article and after a lovely conversation, Kathy also told me about a reunion she and the rest of the Land of the Lost cast were planning with Spencer Milligan who played her on screen Father, Rick Marshall in the first two season of the hit television series! WOW, what a reunion millions of Land of the Lost fans would absolutely love to be at and see!
Luckily there will be cameras at this reunion because this meeting has been some thirty (30) to forty (40) years in the making. While some members of the cast have been in regular contact for years, such as Wesley Eure (Will Marshall), Kathy Coleman (Holly Marshall) and Philip Paley (Cha-Ka), no one really knew what had happened to Spencer Milligan. So by thirty or forty years we are specifically referring to members of the cast meeting up with each other and Spencer Milligan again after so long.
As the time has gotten closer for this cast reunion, which is scheduled for the post-Independence Day holiday during the weekend of July 5th through the 7th, Wesley Eure has actually had several posts on the subject, which I simply loved reading and here are his words,
“Last night (June 11th) I got a call from Kathy (Holly) and from Philip (Chaka) and it looks like we might be on a road trip to find Spencer (Marshal). It has been over 30 years since Philip and I saw Spencer….I can’t wait for the reunion. We might even video the “Searching for Spencer” trip…. I can’t wait!!! I feel like a kid on Christmas morning.”
Seeing this confirmation of my conversation with Kathy was so much fun to realize that this was really happening, as I could only wish I could be there to cover it of course, but more so just as a fan of a beloved show! Then on June 14th, Wesley posted this,
“Well it is all set….Kathy (Holly), Philip (Chaka) and I are heading to Wisconsin on July 5th to finally, after 30 years, reunite with our “dad”, Spencer Milligan. Philip called me last night and we were both sort of “giddy” with excitement to finally all be together again.”
Philip is amazing. As I am telling him about trying to buy a camcorder to video us all, he said he just didn’t want anything to get in the way and interfere with this heartfelt moment. He is such great soul! I adore him.
I am so grateful to have this “moment in time”…..It makes me tear up just thinking about being with my TV Family again….hell, they are more than a pretend family….they ARE family!!!
…….A very special thanks to Kathy Colman and Troy & Kimberly at Mears Online Auctions for making this happen.”
When I read this I almost got misty from a ‘Land of the Lost was my favorite show as kid’ perspective, but to see how much it all means to the cast really makes me not only remember the fondness and love I had for this show, but almost makes me feel like a part of me is coming home this weekend.
Wesley then went on to post this on Facebook, Sunday the 30th of June, accompanied by an amazing picture of Kathy, Wesley and Philip after the three of them had gotten together for a meeting of child stars in the Hollywood Hills at the home of child actor Moosie Dryer, who played Howie on the Bob Newhart Show. I simply love the photo of these three Land of the Lost cast members and can only imagine what the photos will look like in just a few short days when Spencer Milligin is also in them. Here is what Wesley had to say,
“Here is a picture of Kathy (Holly) and Phil (Chaka) and I at the “Child Star Party” yesterday. I am so looking forward to our trip next weekend to see Spencer (Marshall). We do have fun together!! We are a REAL family!! I can’t believe it has been almost 40 years since I have seen Spencer.”
So there you have it, this coming weekend somewhere in Wisconsin, a raft carrying three souls who have in some ways never left the Land of the Lost, in that so many millions of fans remember their adventures fondly through their own beautiful childhood memories of Saturday mornings in front of the television with a big bowl of cereal, will indeed come home when they once again meet up with their on-screen father Spencer Milligan some 30 to 40 years later.
May it be everything you hope and expect it to be Marshall Family and know that all of us who will always love you for entertaining and taking us to a pocket universe in the Land of the Lost all those years ago will indeed be with you in heart and mind!
