Actor Reeve Carney, who had the honour of portraying Spider-Man for the Broadway musical version of the popular Marvel hero has scored himself a somewhat mysterious and dark role in Showtimes new series ‘Penny Dreadful’.

According to a report at Hollywood Reporter the actor who played the duel role of Peter Parker and Spider-Man in the much talked about musical is setting up to play the role of Dorian Grey.

The eight-episode drama revolves around some of literature’s famed monsters — including Dr. Frankenstein and his creature, Dorian Gray and figures from the Dracula — weaving together classic horror origin stories as the characters grapple with their monstrous alienation.

Carney’s Dorian Grey is a new revision on Oscar Wild’s supernaturally attractive and decadent young hero. Penny’s Dorian is further described as confident and mesmerizing, yet somewhat isolated.

Penny Dreadful was created by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan (Skyfall), who will write and executive produce alongside Academy Award winner Sam Mendes and Neal Street’s Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road). Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible) directs the first two episodes.

The cast of Penny Dreadful thus far includes Timothy Dalton as Sir Malcolm, a tough African explorer on a deeply personal quest; Josh Hartnett as Ethan and Eva Green as Vanessa, the lone female in the story.

The psychosexual horror series will begin production in October in London. The series will debut in spring 2014.
