In Review: Danger Girl: Trinity #4

The covers: J. Scott Campbell drew and Nei Ruffino colored the Regular Cover with all three girls ready for action. I wish all three girls were equally bright as Abbey. I would love to see the details on Sonya. The RI Cover is the Regular Cover without Ruffino’s work. It shows you how good an artist Campbell is and how good a colorist Ruffino is with his absence. Overall grades: Both A

The story: Opening in dramatic style, Abbey is being swept out of a cave in Egypt by a flood of water. Evil Prince Amahz has his men entering the cave to search for the Danger Girl, not knowing that they are about to blasted out of the cave and off the cliff to their deaths. Amahz could care less for his men, angry because he’s lost an important crown, which he soon sees Abbey clutching as she dangles from the cliff. Meanwhile, on the Danger Yacht, Valerie hijacks a satellite so she can contact Sydney. From there it’s get Syd and Sonja together to save Abbey, but before they can unite they’ve each got to get out of their own predicaments. Together the three battle Amahz and his men, with Dallas getting a lot of laughs, especially on Page 14, which made me laugh out loud. Andy Hartnell wraps up this story with a lot of fun and action, and one of the best villain exists ever (on Page 16). Very enjoyable. Overall grade: A

The art: Every girl has a different artist drawing their pages, so here we go: John Royle draws and Philip Moy inks Pages 1 – 3, 10 – 12, and 16; Harvey Tolibao draws Pages 4 – 8, 13, and 20 – 21; while Stephen Molnar draws Pages 9, 14 – 15, 17 – 19, and 22. Royle and Moy’s style most closely resembles co-creator Campbell’s version of the girls. It becomes somewhat cartoonish on Amahz, but it’s still enjoyable. Tolibao’s art is highly detailed, to the point where you could count every hair in Sydney’s hair. Very nice details at the royal palace on Page 20, too! My favorite of this issue, and the entire series, is Stephen Molnar. The lovely women, the great action, and buffoon sidekick Dallas show him to be a superior artist. His faces are amazingly descriptive, with their emotions telling the story as much as Hartnell’s script. Molnar needs to do any entire book, or series, on his own. Overall grade: A

The colors: Fantastic job by Romulo Fajardo, working with four different artists, to create a unified look on the book. Bright colors reign throughout, be they in Egypt, on the Danger Yacht, or the subtle violet shading of a harem, Fajardo is aces everywhere. My favorite page of his? Why “KRABOOOM” of course! Overall grade: A+

The letters: Scene setting, perfect dialogue and sound effects come from Neil Uyetake. My favorite contributions from him were the large yells and exclamations contained in equally large balloons. Some letterers mistakenly use smaller balloons with large utterances to make the yell look large. Instead this has the opposite effect, making the scream look small. Thankfully, Uyetake doesn’t make this choice, and the book “sounds” better because of it. Overall grade: A+

The final line: Sorry, no. This can’t be the end. I want more. A fun story, great art and terrific action like this must continue! C’mon, guys! Monthly–please! Overall grade: A

 

Patrick Hayes was a contributor to the Comic Buyer’s Guide for a few years with “It’s Bound to Happen!” He had to give that up to teach 8th graders English for 19 years. He then moved to a high school to teach 9th graders English, but after a year was moved to teach 10th grade. This means he did a really good job or a really poor job last year.
