In Review: The Case Files Of Harlen Falk
Synopsis: ‘The Case Files of Harlan Falk’ is the story of a man who literally makes deals with devils. Whether you’re involved in a territorial dispute with an invading parallel dimension, or simply looking to renegotiate terms with your local Tooth Fairy, Harlan Falk is ready to represent you. No win, no fee.
Review: First off before I get started on this review. I have to bring up that have been waiting for the release of this particular book from Cy Dethan since 2008, which is the year where I first interviewed the writer for this very site. But its been worth the wait!
What we have with Harlen Falk is a new take on the hostage negotiator or ambulance chasing lawyer. In fact the opening six pages sees the central character of Falk trying to negotiate a compromise between a group of Zombies and a family living somewhere in the USA. Negotiations fail, but the moment sets up the premise of Harlen Falks character really well and provided me with a few laughs.
When reading Harlen Falk’s dialogue when he is negotiating I somehow found myself imagining the voice sounding somewhat similar to the actor who voices the talking Gremlin in the movie ‘Gremlins II: The New Batch.’
Things go wrong for Harlen early on in the book when he fails to save the life of a child, whose imaginary friend’s have gotten out of hand. Its pretty cool what Cy does here. The imaginary friends are a child’s imaginary personas of Rock, Paper, Scissors. A game that we all play as kids. And scissors is refereed to as Mr. Scissors.
A few years after this failure, which pretty much sees Falk drummed out of the police force he gets a second bite at the cherry when the younger brother of the dead kid is kidnapped.
The Artwork in this is done by Scott James and Alex Johns and its gorgeous. I loved the use of colours and the characterisations were all well drawn and coloured. Even down to the rather grizzly scene in which we see the kidnapped child have his finger chopped off.
The Lettering in the book is done by Nic Wilkinson, who once again brings something very creative and different to the book in much the same way as she did with ‘Cancer Town 2,’ Nic somehow manages to letter things a little differently for all of the key characters, but does so in such a way that she never undermines the work of the artists. Her lettering blends perfectly with the art and only draws your eyeliner into the book more than it would be when reading a regular comic.
As ever with any Cy Dethan comic book series ‘The Case Files Of Harken Falk’ has a few obscenities dotted throughout as his various characters vent their anger or frustration. But this is kind of a Cy Dethan calling card and it never ceases to amaze me at some of the creative ways in which Cy uses cuss words. F***Rat being a particular favourite. These never take over or undermine the story though and are only used when they appropriately serve the story.
So its definitely not for younger readers.
As said at the start ‘The Case Files Of Harlen Falk’ has been a long time coming and I now find myself wanting more because this character would make for a great ongoing comic book series.
‘The Case Files Of Harlen Falk’ is available to buy now at most good comics stores throughout the UK.
