Fox’s planned spin-off series of Batman, which has the working title of ‘Gotham’ is to centre on the career of the highly respected police detective Commissioner Gordon, but apparently this isn’t likely to prevent us from seeing some of the other iconic Batman characters throughout the shows run.

A new report from TV Line has revealed that we could get to see The Penguin, The Riddler and Catwoman in the series as well as millionaire philanthropist playboy Bruce Wayne. This revelation came from the recent Television Critics Association press junket with series head writer and producer Kevin Reilly.

Unlike other superhero shows, Reilly cryptically and gently snarked, that dance around the incorporation of popular names, “This is all of the classic Batman characters, with a young Bruce Wayne, the Penguin, the Riddler [and] how they came to be…. What events led up to [someone] becoming Catwoman…. all with Gotham teetering on the edge.”

Asked to expound on the presence of Bruce Wayne — a character heretofore declared basically untouchable by shows such as Smallville and Arrow — Reilly made clear: “We will arc a young Bruce Wayne from a child” of about 12 until whenever the series finale might be, at which point he “puts on the cape.”

Apparently Fox has paid a very hefty licensing fee to Warner/DC Comics in order to use as many characters from the Batman comics as is possible.

The penguin is an interesting one for Fox to have gone after because in recent years The Penguin has become a serious character in the comics and pretty much rules over Gotham City in a similar way to most Mafia Dons would. As to Catwoman. Well she is always a welcome addition to any Batman story and always interesting to see.
