Fan Film Friday: Star Wars: ‘TROOPS’

One of the best independent productions ever made combines the universe of George Lucas’ galaxy-spanning Star Wars with a long-running reality series that has been a mainstay on Saturday nights for the Fox TV Network for more than two decades.
It’s been said that the funniest comedy is that which stays closest to its target. If that’s the case, “Troops” has been nothing short of hysterical since its release in 1997 after being written and directed by Kevin Rubio.

Fan Film Friday: Star Trek: Encarta IV: ‘Dark Hope’

One of my favorite episodes of Star Trek: Voyager was a two-parter called “Year of Hell.” In that story, the ship and its crew struggled to survive and maintain the status quo with no help from starbases or Starfleet Command to back them up.
Apparently, the people who put together the Star Trek: Encarta fan film series also wondered about that, too, and the result is a movie-length fan film epic called “Dark Hope.”
One of the first problems in making the film was explaining how the Encarta was even there since it looked like First Officer Gregory McKnight (Chris Elliott) hit the self-destruct button, and it looked like the ship and its crew had gone to the big Enterprise in the sky.

Fan Film Friday: Steam Trek: ‘The Moving Picture’

The people who create independent productions are always asking the question “What if…?” This time around, a group of fans asked the question “What if Star Trek was produced in the 1920s, when movies contained background piano music and screen-filling cards to show you what the characters are saying?”
A group calling itself the Ad Hoc Film Society answered that question back in 1994 with a 10-minute episode called Steam Trek: The Moving Picture, which was set in the far future … 1980.
Director Dennis Sisterson begins his episode with the ship in trouble. The chief engineer (a bear puppet operated by Jane Soot and called Mister Soot or Sootie) warns Captain James T. Shirt (Jon Chapman) that the Enterprise is running out of the coal that powers the vessel.
