According to a convention report at Trekmovie.com actress and singer Nichelle Nichols very nearly had a cameo in J.J. Abrams new Star Trek movie, which premieres next May.
While attending Supernova Pop Culture Expo in Perth Australia – Nichols related her experiences working on Star Trek and also told the audience about her first meetings with Star Trek producer/director JJ Abrams and actress Zoe Saldana who will play the young Uhura in the new movie.
“He was very excited… like a young fan. He was like ‘I can’t believe I am sitting here with Uhura.’ And he said ‘You know, I would really like to find a valid reason for you to be in the movie.’ And, of course, I became – ooh! wow! I would love it. But how? And he says ‘that is the point, I don’t want it to be a gimmick, I don’t want to just be doing that to just do it.’ Leonard [Nimoy] is in it because the whole movie is about him, about Spock. …. He said ‘I’m just thinking’ – and he was telling me about the young actress who got the part to play the young Uhura, the pre-Uhura, Zoe Saldana – and he said ‘I think she could learn a lot from a lovely lady’, and he said: ‘You know what I’d love? I’d love for you to play her mother!’ And I said: ‘You know what I’d really like?…I’d like to play her grandmother!’ And he said ‘You’re too young to play her grandmother!’ and I said: ‘This is what grandmother’s look like!’”
Nichols added that Abrams was really keen to make the cameo happen – but sadly the writers strike put a spanner in the works. Either way it was very obvious to attendees at the convention that Nichols was totally charmed by her meeting with JJ Abrams.

Dynamite Nabs Dredd
Written by Ian Cullen on June 30, 2008 – 9:30 am -American Comics Company Dynamite who have the licence to produce Battlestar Galactica and Red Sonja Comics have just nabbed the rights to do a line of comics based on the popular UK created comic character Judge Dredd.
According to a report at the UK Comics Site Downthetubes.net via top US Comics site Newsarama – Dynamite who also recently announced plans to produce a new comic book take on Buck Rogers have landed the rights for Dredd from Rebellion.
Dynamites take on the original Dredd strips will be aimed solely at an American audience. Garth Ennis and John Wagner will more than likely be brought in to develop Dredd’s Universe for this new US line of comics. Ennis is perhaps best known for his work on the Marvel comics character ‘The Preacher’ which shares a similar dark and gritty feel to those which can be found in the Dredd comics.
John Wagner on the other hand has been a mainstay with Judge Dredd and British comics over the years, and will be on hand to protect the integrity of Dredd.
Dynamite have also secured the rights to a number of other strips from the classic 2000AD characters – but Dredd being the most famous internationally will be the first to launch stateside.
