Interview: Douglas Wolk On Reading Comics: How Graphic Novels Work
Written by Ian Cullen on March 31, 2009 – 12:30 pm -
Douglas Wolk is the author of Reading Comics: How Graphic Novels Work and What they Mean and James Brown’s Live at the Apollo. He has written about comic books and music for the New York Times, Blender, the Washington Post, Publishers Weekly, Rolling Stone, and Salon.com. He has also run the record label, Dark Beloved Cloud, since 1992. In short, he’s had the writing career most fans can only dream of.
Nicholas Yanes: There seems to be this belief in academia that comic book creators and people who write about comic books have PhDs from major universities. So, what’s your educational background? And did it have any influence on how you approach comic books?
Douglas Wolk: …Sort of! My undergraduate degree was in English, and I didn’t write about comics for any of my coursework. In 2002-2003, though, I was a Mid-Career Fellow with the National Arts Journalism Program at Columbia University. The idea of the NAJP was, in part, to let arts critics study within their discipline instead of writing about it, and I decided that I was going to put together a yearlong academic program to make myself a better comics critic. So I took a bunch of classes I figured would be relevant–the most useful were a film class taught by James Schamus about visual narrative, a drawing class taught by Jesse Bransford, and a visual-arts theory class taught by Coco Fusco, all of which opened up my mind about comics considerably.
