The Torchwood Team Are Back

As fans are aware Torchwood returns to our television screens on Monday 6 July at 9pm UK and it would seem that the various UK Television listings are as excited as us fans, and have all ran some pretty good copy about the forthcoming Children Of Earth mini series.

While talking to Total TV Guide Russell T. Davies who wrote the mini series, revealed what prompted him to up the stakes for Captain Jack and the rest of the Torchwood team.

“I hadn’t written an episode since the very first one, so I tinkered with the format. I thought the team had become too comfortable, so we’ve got rid of their base and car. They have no money; nothing. Frankly, it makes it a better thriller. I also think , in a show’s third year, it’s time to take stock and see the characters’ families. So we discover Jack has a daughter [Lucy Cohu], we meet Ianto’s sister [Katy Wix] and Gwen gets pregnant. In a story about children, it was good to load the dice in that way.”

For his part on the series John Barrowman who plays Captain Jack initially felt he and the other actors were being punished due to the shorter episode count for season three, and hopes that if a fourth season does happen, that it reverts back to the 13 – episode format, which was offered up in season one and two of the series.

When talking about Captain Jacks evolution in season three Barrowman told TV & Satellite Week that some very dark and testing times lay in wait for Jack Harkness and the team.

The new season offers us a new enemy who are potentially the biggest threat that Torchwood have been faced with to date.

“The 456 is an alien race that was named after the frequency on which they first contacted Earth, way back in the 1960’s,” explains John Barrowman. “Now, all the children are making these freaky noises, and the past is coming back to haunt us. Torchwood much find out what’s going on.”

If fighting an external threat isn’t enough. One member of the team will be revealed to be the holder of a mysterious secret, which is likely to shock everyone.

“One of the team is hiding a secret that will be a revelation to a lot of people – not only to viewers watching, but to the team itself,” says Barrowman.

“This series of Torchwood is going to be a brilliant piece of television. It’s an emotional roller – coaster.”

Perhaps the most anticipated aspect of the third season is the fact that we learn that Captain Jack has a family in the form of a daughter who has mysterious origins.

“Jack has a daughter called Alice and a grandson, and that’s all I can really tell you,” teases Barrowman. “I only found out about it when the script landed in front of me. But it’s an exciting development because it will add more depth to Jack and make his decisions feel weighty.

“You’ll learn a lot about the characters in ways you’ve never known them before,” he adds. “You’re going to see the difference in Jack and Ianto’s relationship and Gwen and her Husband Rhys – but you’re also going to see some similarities. The characters have definitely evolved, which makes it really interesting for us to play as actors.

Torchwood returns to UK television on Monday 6 July.
