Why Surrogates Depicts Frightening Vision Of Possible Future

surrogatesOne of the things great Science Fiction often does is uses modern day science as a premise to predict the science and technologies of our possible future. And this is something that Surrogates does most effectively.

Surrogates is the movie adaptation of the popular 2005 Graphic Novel written by Robert Venditti and the movie version, which hits cinema’s in both the USA and UK as well as the world next month stars Bruce Willis as FBI agent Greer and is skillfully directed by Jonathan Mostow.

In a recent interview for SciFi Wire Mostow revealed why he feels Surrogates is a scary vision of our possible future, and why he feels the movie will strike a chord with today’s very tech orientated society.

“There’s just something incredibly resonant about the idea. It’s almost a metaphor for the way we’re living our lives right now. It’s a story that asks the question ‘How do you stay human in this relentlessly, increasingly technological world we live in?’ The graphic novel … may have a different meaning for everybody who reads it, on a specific level, but on a general level it’s just in the zeitgeist. It’s made up, it’s science fiction, but it’s something that feels very relevant.”

The movie is set in the near future and centres on FBI agents Greer and Peters. It’s a utopian world in which technological breakthroughs allow people to live vicariously as their minds are downloaded into android – like drones—or “surrogates” of themselves—while their bodies remain at home. There should be no crime and no one should die, but the problems start when a pair of surrogates are brutally murdered, leading to the remote deaths of their human operators.

You can learn a little more about the Graphic Novel Surrogates on this Sunday’s edition of the SciFiPulse Radio show, which features an exclusive interview with writer Robert Venditti, who gives some interesting insights about the book, and touches a little on the movie.
