Sony Let Go Of Spider-Man TV Rights

Spider-manElectronics giant Sony has reportedly relinquished the television rights for Marvel Superhero Spider-Man.

Sony Pictures who have distributed all three of the Spider-Man movies, along with animated television show The Spectacular Spider-Man, which ran for two seasons.

The rights have now been handed back to Marvel, presumably in conjunction with Disney’s purchase of the comic book firm.

“Sony is no longer involved with The Spectacular Spider-Man. I’m informed that Marvel can now produce the series, but of course, they don’t have to,” the show’s producer Greg Weisman told IGN .

The second season of the animated Spider-Man series is currently airing on the new Disney XD channel in the US. Any future for the animated series is now believed to be dependent on ratings and DVD sales.

Sony will retain the film rights to the character, receiving “some concession vis-a-vis the live action Spider-Man features” in exchange for returning the television license to Marvel.
