Synopsis: Reeling from the death of Steven Nick Cutter fights on to refocus his team and continue their mission to discover the secrets of the anomalies, which continue to throw out more questions than answers.
For season three Cutters crew are joined by new leader Danny Quinn [Jason Flemyng], Egyptologist Sarah Page [Laila Rouass] and new head of ARC security [Ben Mansfield].
The third season also adds a bit more conspiracy to the pot when a new Government official starts to poke her nose into the running of the ARC and seeks to figure out a means to control the anomalies for her own political ends.
The Series: Season Three of Primeval picks up mere weeks after the end of the second season’s shocking cliffhanger which saw the death of Cutters friend and closest Allie Steven. And from episode three of the third season it became very apparent that the gloves were off in terms of no character no matter how loved by fans was safe, and that’s how it should be.
In this DVD are all ten episodes of the third and probably the best season of the series.
Season three was a transitional period for Primeval in terms of certain characters leaving and newer fresher characters came into the fold and did so without losing any of the shows trademark humour.
Cutters death in the third episode was handled really well, and it resolved his storyline in a meaningful way, and in a sense allowed the remaining original team members Abby (Hannah Spearritt) and Connor (Andrew Lee Potts) room to grow up as characters, and grow they did. Especially Connor who in a sense lost a father figure when Cutter dies.
The third season is also made that bit more of an intense action adventure with the added complication of a Government Official who is conspiring against the arc team. If you think Helen Cutter is evil. Well you haven’t seen nothing yet.
The acting performances throughout the third season were all top notch. Even from newcomers Ben Mansfield, Jason Flemyng and Laila Rouass. In fact Rouass provided much humour when teamed with Spearritt in a girl talk sort of way, and made for some very fun moments involving Connor.
Another area where the third season continued to excel was in the special effects department. The CGI throughout all seasons of the series was outstanding, but they FX department really out did themselves in the final episode when we get to see some distant ancestors of the human race which looked far more convincing than a person in heavy make up would have looked.
Extras: In terms of extras you have a fair few things. These include commentaries for various episodes of the show, which are both informative and humorous. As well as two documentaries ‘Cutters Odyssey’ in which Douglas Henshall and various cast members talk about Cutters journey from the first season to his eventual death in the third season. And ‘Genesis Of A Creature’ which gives an insightful look at the creation of various creatures you see in the third season.
Overall: This is a must buy for any fan of Primeval, and is the best season of the show yet. All in all the series continued to evolve in season three and this DVD Box set, which is released today in the USA is well worth the investment from any American and Canadian fan. And for $39.99 is good value for money.
Score 9/10
