DC Comics And Beyond: Comics Reviews

Halloween isn’t very far away now.  More and more spooky books are hitting the stands, so let’s get down to boo-siness.

DC Halloween Special '091.  DC Universe Halloween Special ’09 #1. As the cover says, this issue contains “thirteen all-new tales of terror.”

The book has a story with Bizarro bookending the other tales, called “Unhappy Halloween.”  (Of course, Bizarro means just the opposite of what he says, so … .)

Everybody knows I’m a big Batman fan, so it will come as no surprise that I enjoyed Batman’s appearance called “Halloween Trick And Defeat.”  We get to see pretty much the whole Bat-family as they try to stop Killer Moth from ruining their holiday party.

Next, I really liked Kid Flash in “Mirror Games.”  That was probably the spookiest tale in the book, with Mirror Master as the big bad.

Superman and The Flash team up for “To The Finish Line,” which has a nice surprise at the end.  You shouldn’t always believe what you see on Halloween.

Other fun things to read include Green Lantern Guy Gardner in “Halloween The Guy Way,” The Outsiders in “Seeing Is Believing” (Hey, didn’t I just use that phrase?), Superman in “My Turn To Be Scary,” and Wonder Woman in “Haunted Or Hoax.”  Look for Robin, Red Robin, and The Creeper to try to scare the wits out of you as well.

I recommend the book, which got me in the Halloween mood.

Superman Batman #652. Superman/Batman #65. The cover of this issue features a tombstone with blood dripping from the Superman/Batman combined logo over the words, “Here Lies The World’s Finest.”

Written by Peter Johnson & Matt Cherniss, several artists lend their talents to this interesting psychological study of the two heroes as well as their arch-nemeses.  Of course, someone is manipulating things from behind the scenes, and since it is Halloween, it probably won’t take you long to figure out just who that might be.  Interestingly enough, the title of the story is called “Happy Halloween” (Now where did I just hear something like that recently?).

What scares Batman?  What would frighten Superman?  What would make the Joker afraid?  And what would Lex Luthor fear most?  I like the notions that the creative team have come up with, and I was particularly impressed with the last panel, which the person behind it all would likely be terrified of the most.

I found the Batman section the scariest, but I certainly didn’t expect Luthor’s fears to be funny. At the end, Superman and Batman decide its best to keep their nightmares to themselves, probably a smart idea.

Chew #5Also out this week are We Kill Monsters #4 of 6 from Red 5 Comics, Poe from Boom!, and Blackest Night: Superman #3 of 3 from DC Comics.

I’ve been lending my copies of Chew #1-4 to friends, and everyone who reads them really likes them.  This week, the fifth issue hits the stands, and it is chuck full of surprises that will keep you guessing until the final page of this five-issue arc.   I didn’t expect the book to end the way it did, which I loved.  There is nothing better than a story that will keep me guessing until it is finally told.  If you want gory stories that will make you feel revolted and will also make you laugh out loud, check out Chew from Image Comics.

Next week: When Halloween is only a few days away, the comics will keep on coming!
