In Review: The Sarah Jane Adventures – The Mad Woman In The Attic Parts 1 & 2
Written by Ian Cullen on October 24, 2009 – 3:41 pm -
Synopsis: Rani is an old woman with many regrets, and is alone. When a teenage boy visits she tells him about her past adventures with Sarah Jane Smith and the gang.
The Review: These two episodes very much focus on Rani who after visiting Sarah Jane and the gang feels left out, due the the gang having spoke to Maria via the internet.
When Rani gets home she receives an E-mail from an old school friend telling her about a demon that lives in a fairground. Rani being the impetuous soul that she is sets out on her own to investigate, and finds that all is not as it seems, and the the demon is in fact a lonely alien girl who is in real need of a friend.
The episode, which is written by Joseph Lidster delves fairly deep into the characters and pretty much gives us more information on Rani, Sarah Jane and the rest of the gang.
An interesting side affect of the gangs encounter with this Alien is that they all get glimpses of their possible futures – and we see a sneak preview of the Doctor as he comes to Bannerman Road. Which will make up the meat and potatoes of next weeks episode.
All the set up for this story is in episode one. The second episode centres more on the gang trying to get the alien girl back to her ship, in order to save her life.
However a wish made by Rani becomes all too true due to the ship malfunctioning. So by the end of the episode we’re taken back to Rani the old woman who is telling the boy about her past and regrets, and soon learns that the boy is not just any boy. He turns out to be the son of the Alien girl she and Sarah Jane helped save, and he’s returned to put things back as they were so that Rani can be reunited with the Bannerman Road gang.
All in all this was a fun and somewhat moving episode. The moral of the tale obviously being be careful what you wish for. For you just might get it. There is a little bit of a Sapphire and Steele vibe going on, which makes the episode a tad stranger than previous episodes.
A confident performance here from Anjili Mohindra as Rani and some great supporting performances from guest cast to boot.
Score 7/10
