With 3D films now all the rage, DreamWorks is turning the classic manga comic Ghost In The Shell into a live-action, 3D futuristic polic thriller, according to Variety.
Laeta Kalogridis, the writer who worked on the short-lived NBC series Bionic Woman and the WB’s short-lived Birds Of Prey, as well as movies including Shutter Island, Pathfinder, The Dive, Demonkeeper, and Battle Angel, will pen the script.
Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul of Seaside Entertainment will produce and originally brought the project to DreamWorks. Steven Spielberg took a personal interest in the project and made sure itended up in the hands of his company, DreamWorks. Spielberg has said that Ghost In The Shell is one of his favorite stories and is “a genre that has arrived and we enthusiastically welcome it to DreamWorks.”
Ghost In The Shell remains a favorite among anime fans. First published in 1989, the series created by Masamune Shirow has had a long life, generating two more manga editions, three anime film adaptations and an anime TV series. The second anime film, Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence, was released in the U.S. by DreamWorks in 2004.
Here’s the premise: “Ghost In The Shell follows Major Motoko Kusanagi’s pursuit of the cyber-criminal The Puppeteer, who commits crimes by “ghosthacking”, or taking control of human minds. We learn that the Puppeteer is actually an autonomous artificial intelligence created by a government foreign affairs and counter-terrorism agency called Section 6. Kusangi’s body is largely bionic, and when she and the Puppeteer come together, a unique synthesis takes place.”
No release date has yet been announced.

Just how are the film makers going to get around the female nudity issues which was present in the animated version ?

They could probably just leave it out entirely since it was never in the Manga or in the Anime series, it was only in the movie to begin with basically.
Although in the manga there were a couple of sex scenes that are left out, and also the only nude female character in the manga was the Puppetmaster.
But it wouldn’t really be too hard to leave out the nudity anyways since it’s pretty unnecessary.
