This week was a surprisingly light week for me.  Not only were there just two books in my file this week, but they were both Marvel titles.  One was the not-so-concluding conclusion to the Iron Man “World’s Most Wanted” arc.  The other was this title.  It seems that everyone is reviewing The Invincible Iron Man so I figured I’d review this book instead.

Before I get into the review I should first state that I loved Generation X, so Emplate is villain that I am eager to see again.

Overall, this story arc is one of transition.  Carey is no longer exploring Professor Xavier’s past and trying to tie up his continuity.  Nor is he able to write a book that can ignore the other X-Men titles.  So what is left is a title in which Rogue is the star and everyone else is clearly a supporting character.  How this will work out can only be determined at the end of part four, but, for what its worth, this issue was enjoyable and well told.

For instance, Emplate’s creepy inter-dimensional mansion is well designed and his motives seem understandable and in no way generic.  Additionally, the behavior displayed by the characters seems natural and in no way forced.

Oddly enough though, what I enjoy the most about this title is how little it has to do with Dark Reign.  I am enjoying Dark Reign, but it is nice to pick up a book that doesn’t feel the pressure to take part in a company wide story arc.

Also of importance is Acuna’s artwork.  Given that half of this story takes place in a weird interdimensional location, his art manages to present that world as something truly creepy without being gory or cliché.
