While some people might say that Michael Jackson might have himself been involved in some “paranormal activity,” his Sony film This Is It took $101 million around the world in five days, and also outdistanced Paramount’s Paranormal Activity over the weekend, according to BoxOfficeMojo.
Sony was thrilled with the motion picture’s performance. “The numbers are incredible, and we got some of the highest exit polls we’ve ever seen,” Sony worldwide president of distribution Rory Bruer said. “It goes far beyond being aconcert movie. Kenny Ortega created a film that is compelling and exciting and an incredible tribute to the King of Pop.”
Sony had expected the film to open at $30 million-$40 million in the U.S..
Over the weekend, the Jackson movie didn’t do “bad” while taking in $21.3 million. Paranormal declined just 22% and brought in another $16.5 million, giving it a cumulative total of $84.8 million in its sixth week.
In the U.S., Halloween can dampen moviegoing (especially when it falls during the weekend), and this year was no,different. Ticket sales were essentially the same as last year.
AstroBoy fell 55% in its second frame to an estimated $3 million from 3,020 runs; for a total of $10.9 million so far.
Saw VI continues to be cut off at the knees by Paranormal as it fell to No. 5, declining 61% to an estimated $5.6 million fnd a total of $22.8 million. This film is now expected to be the lowest-grossing member of the movie franchise.
Other genre films were in top grossing movies, including Where The Wild Things Are in sixth place, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant in the tenth spot, followed by Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs and Zombieland.
