Whedon Explains His Terminator Bid

Yesterday, Joss Whedon posted a message on Whedonesque.com indicating his interest in purchasing the Terminator franchise for $10,000. The question raised by people, amused by his suggestions that he do a Terminator of the Rings and give Christian Bale a throat lozenge, has been “Is he serious?”
Whedon addressed that question today in an EW phone interview asking him if he was just being funny, or was he making a bid for the franchise by way of being funny.
“What do you mean, funny?! You think $10,000 is funny?!” was Whedon’s initial response.
“No, I do not think they’re going to call me and say ‘Congratulations! We’ll have that $10,000 now,’” expounded Whedon. “Although, it would be non-exclusive. Other people could make Terminator movies and TV shows too. I’m just putting that out there in case you publish this. But I adore the franchise. I literally did learn a huge amount from that [franchise]. [The Terminator] came out when I was in college, and I was like, This is how you construct a story. It’s very important to me. That part was true. The part where I think I’m going to get it, not so true.
While Whedon fully realizes his bid to own the franchise is not likely to be taken seriously, his desire to have some sort of creative input into the franchise is out there – and could well spark the interest of whomever will put out the money for the franchise, which was put up for sale this week.
