Doc-Savage-batmanThe 30s pulp character that inspired the creation of Superman and Batman is back, and for his first adventures Doc Savage will find himself teamed with a Batman who is just starting out, and in a recent interview for SFX Magazines RED ALERT writer Brian Azzarello gave a few hints into his take on the popular 30s pulp character.

For those not in the know. The character of Doc Savage made his first appearance in the Street and Smith Publications of the 1930s and 40s and was the creation of Henry W. Ralston and editor John L. Nanovic.

Savage like the best of the pulp characters was an ordinary human being who has trained body and mind to the peak of human perfection. In truth the character was inspired by the Arthur Conan Doyle creation Sherlock Holmes, only was an americanized contemporary version of that great detective for the 1930s.

For the new comic book mini series, which sees the Doc teamed up with Batman Brian Azzarello has chose to set the story in the 1930’s but admits that his take on Doc Savage will differ slightly from the original. In fact Azzarello by his own admission isn’t a fan of Savage, and saw this one shot team up with Batman as a chance to reinvent Doc Savage a little.

“I hesitate to call myself a fan but I was definitely aware of those characters when I was a kid. I read some of the Doc Savage books. I gravitated to the pulpy stuff; it’s about as close to superheroes as I ever got as a kid.”

Although this comic mini series is being billed as a team up. Azzarello assures fans that it is very much Doc Savage who is the star of the story.

“In our world, Doc is an established character while Batman is just getting started; this is almost Batman right off the bat,” he laughs. “That’s what gets the two of them together. When reports come out of Gotham of a vigilante running around in a costume, a hood and a cape, it attracts Doc’s attention.”

If having Batman and Doc Savage headlining isn’t enough for you. Azzarello teased that we may see a few appearances from other characters such as The Spirit, The Avenger and Rima the Jungle Girl as well as established supporting DC characters like Black Canary and the Blackhawks.

“I’m taking characters that don’t work well in a world of superpowers,” he says, insisting that it is not a team up book by default. “Doc has definitely got the lead role. He’s like this world’s Superman.”

Doc Savage/Batman will go on release later this month, and will just be the prelude to a new Doc Savage mini series that will hit sometime in 2010.

This is a MAJOR BUMMER for ME, Ian! As a LONG TIME Doc Savage fan; I was SICKED AND DISGUSTED by the ARROGANT, HIGHLY DISRESPECTFUL attitude that Brian ASSarellHOLE showed towards Doc Savage fans in an interview from a few months back.

I probably would have been picking this book up; and at least giving it a chance; if he hadn’t spewed such contemptuous bile at the fans. Fact IS; I better NEVER meet the TWERP, it’ll be “CLOBBERIN’ TIME” for sure!!!;-)

In all seriousness; it’s a shame that DC allowed such a MORON to write Doc; especially since Doc comics are somewhat few and far between these days!

I HOPE ALL DOC SAVAGE FANS will AVOID THIS BOOK!!! It’s written by a JERK with DISDAIN for the FANS, and NO TRUE LOVE FOR or knowledge OF the character!

    BEN

I’ll probably give it a try and then try and pick up a copy of one of the original Doc Savage stories to see how they compare.

My only exposure to Doc Savage is the movie with Ron Eli and that was back in the 80s, and tbh honest. It wasn’t that great of a movie.
