6a00d83451d69069e20120a67a10d6970b-320wi It’s a sad, but not surprising, day for Joss Whedon fans everywhere. Fox, the network that tore our hearts out by crushing Firefly, has canceled Dollhouse.

“Yes. Canceled. Sad but true,” tweeted Maurissa Tancharoen, Dollhouse writer, who is also married to Whedon’s brother, writer Jed Whedon.

The sci-fi series, which seemed to defy the odds when it was picked up for a second season despite low ratings (and yet marked increase in viewership when counting DVR and other viewing sources), is expected to finish it’s 13-episode run with an ending that will satisfy viewers.

Dollhouse, which stars Eliza Dushku as a resident of an underground business that programs “actives” to be whatever rich, powerful people pay them to be, was taken off the schedule for airing during sweeps in November, after airing only four episodes, despite the continued success in DVR viewings. It is slated to return in December, when two episodes will be aired each Friday.
