‘V’ Remake Loses Twenty Nine Percent Of Viewers

According to the overnight figures ABC’s re-imagining of the classic 1980s Ken Johnson mini series ‘V’ has lost 29% of its audience from last weeks premier.

The series, which gives a different spin on the classic broke ratings records last week for the network when it claimed in excess of 14 Million veiwers across the United States, but as most people warned. It was going to the shows second week that would be the acid test, and it looks like a fairly large percentage of the audience chose to do their winter yard work instead.

Here’s The Hollywood Reporter’s take on it in its Live Feed blog:

After last week’s record-setting premiere, ABC’s “V” was destined to drop in the ratings for episode two. Driven by 1980s nostalgia and plenty of marketing, viewer curiosity ran high for the debut—a pattern we’ve seen in recent years for network remakes of “Knight Rider,” “90210″ and “American Gladiators.” Tuesday night’s decline, therefore, was not exactly surprising … yet it was pretty steep.

The second “V” hour was seen by 10.6 million viewers and drew a 3.7 preliminary rating among adults 18-49, down 29% from last week. That’s the largest fall from a premiere we’ve seen for a scripted show this season.

The second episode, which was aptly titled ‘There Is No Normal Anymore’, centred on Erica (Elizabeth Mitchell) learning that Jack (Joel Gretsch) is a priest. After that revelation is explained away we saw the two team up and form a plan of action against the Visitors.  Meanwhile Erica’s son gets enrolled into the Visitor peace corps and the Visitors finally win acceptance of the American people to walk around with the same rights as actual citizens.

It would be unwise to write off ‘V’ just yet. The second weeks audience figures are still fairly strong for a new show, and if it retains most of its current audience. The series will likely survive and even thrive. Additionally lets not forget that these early numbers do not include the ratings for those who chose to use their DVR to watch the show later.

It’s not suprising, I was one of those looking forward to this. As an avid fan of the original V years ago, I was eager to see their interpretation of the new one. However so far it’s been extremely poorly written, feels rushed and seems to have a very small budget. Nothign at all to keep the fans hooked.

First episode seemed very rushed. But the pace is more a reflection on today’s television. I mean hard to believe but folks are complaining that Flashworward is to slow.

I quite enjoyed the new ‘V’, but that said I can see various issues with the story and pacing. They really gave far to much away in the pilot episode, and in a lot of ways have left themselves no where to go.

I think many Televiison writers have forgotten certain lessons that Alfred Hitchcock taught in movies. Because ‘V’ just showed its hand right away.
