Birch Considered Ryan Reynolds For ‘Shazam’ Role

shazamIt seems that Ryan Reynolds is the go to actor right now for Superheroes. The actor slashed his way through X-Men: Wolverine Origins earlier this year as Deadpool,  and will reprise that role for the planned movie, but he is also set to play the role of Hal Jordan in the planned Green Lantern movie.

However, it looks like the actor has been under consideration for the role of Shazam in the long gestating movie adaptation of the comic book, in which Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson has long rumoured to be attached as the villain of the piece Black Adam.

In a recent interview for Cinefools screenwriter Bill Birch revealed that Ryan Reynolds would be his first choice to play the red suited hero, and said that Reynolds would be the ideal actor for the role. Birch had to concede that Reynolds involvement with Green Lantern kind of put the actor out of the running for the role.

“I always thought Ryan Reynolds would have been interesting but now that he’s Green Lantern that’s not an option,” he said.

As stated above Dwayne Johnson has long been rumoured to be up for the role of villain The Black Adam. Birch denies that Johnson has signed for the role. “My rule of thumb is that no actor is committed to do a movie until the first day of shooting is over with,” he added.

“I know that [director] Pete Segal and Dwayne have a relationship that was solidified when Pete directed Get Smart. As far as him being committed? I’m sure it’ll all depend on the script.”

Birch went on to add that he and comic book writer Geoff Johns are currently hard at work on redrafting the script. He went on to add that the movie will take on a much lighter tone to the smash hit Batman: Dark Knight movie.

“Tonally I think it’s important to successfully find the balance of comedy and danger in the story. That’s a major aspect I’m focusing on. Frankly hitting the right tone is what’s going to either get this made or keep it in development hell.”
Shazam is slated for a 2011 release.
