The Doctor and reluctant assistent Adelaide Brooke (Lindsay Duncan).
This Sunday sees the penultimate adventure of David Tennant in the role of the tenth Doctor in the long awaited Waters Of Mars, which will be Tennants last adventure before he regenerates at the end of the two part Christmas Special The End Of Time.
Speaking in a recent interview for UK Television listing magazine TV & Satellite Week. Lindsay Duncan who plays the tough Adelaide Brooke, who is teamed with The Doctor for this adventure talked a little about her part in the episode.
When asked about her character in the show Duncan describes Adelaide as being “a very strong, reliable woman with great leadership qualities.”
As to how she meets The Doctor, well lets just say it’s not a case of them striking up a friendship right off the bat, and it’s a case of The Doctor finding her and the group of scientists that she leads.
“They are a small band of isolated scientists on Mars who are interested in finding signs of other life forms, but they aren’t expecting another human being to appear. So when the Doctor turns up, he’s not given the warmest of welcomes, especially by Adelaide. At first, she is suspicious of who he is but, as events begin to unfold, they have to become allies and get to know each other.”
When it comes to the alien thread of the episode. Its fair to say that Waters Of Mars is perhaps one of the darkest episodes to surface in the new series, and below is how Duncan describes the alien’s that she and The Doctor must fight.
“They look extraordinary and bleed water all the time, so their faces, and particularly their eyes, are very strange. They seep water with a relentlessness which builds up the fear.”
As viewers in the UK already know. Doctor Who has a long reputation of playing on the fears of children and adults alike, and has long walked a fine line between what is and what isn’t acceptable. When asked about the fear level of Waters Of Mars, Lindsay Duncan did reveal that the production team had debated if the episode would be too scary for a pre watershed spot, and gave her own take on it.
“I think Doctor Who has to be properly frightening… This is really a very disturbing, dark and emotional episode, and visually it is really impressive, too. You believe you are in this strange but beautiful alien landscape.”
Waters Of Mars will air on BBC One this Sunday, 15 November at 7pm. Fans in the USA will have to wait until December to view the episode when it airs on BBC America.
Fans in the UK will get to see a fair bit of the Doctor in the coming weeks. The new BBC Animated Adventure Dreamland, will air on the official Doctor Who website on November 21. However on November 20 fans will get a sneak preview of the final two part special The End Of Time as part of the BBC’s annual Children In Need fund-raising event.
