Synopsis: When he is bested in mortal combat a chain of events, which leads Arthur into learning the truth about his mother is set into motion.
The Review: Sins Of The Father brings forth one of Merlins more epic episodes of the season, and brings Arthur into direct conflict with his father Uther.
For this episode we’re treated to some well edited swordplay, dark magic and a new sorcerer that will likely give Nimueh a serious run for her money.
Sins Of The Father sees Arthur learn the truth about his birth, a secret, which Uther has been keeping for many moons with the help of Gaius. Upon learning that he was born through the use of Magic from the manipulative sorcerer Morgause who is played beautifully by Emilia Fox. Arthur gets a righteous head of steam on and goes after his father, and damn near kills him. Only to be stopped by Merlin who reluctantly convinces Arthur that it was all a lie.
The confrontation scene between Arthur and Uther in this episode is beautifully played out. Thanks to riveting performances by both Anthony Head and Bradley James. In terms of acting. This scene is very much akin to watching the Jedi Master teach his young apprentice, and Bradley James truly raises his game for the scene.
Those familiar with Arthurian legend will recognize Morgause right off the bat. Though even if you don’t. It is very apparent that she knows much more about Morgana and Arthur than she is supposed too, and the door is left wide open for her eventual return to the series at some later date.
Overall this is definitely one of the stronger episodes of this season, and does much to move the mythology along.
Score 8/10
