McG’s Captain Nemo Movie Sinks

Early this year it was widely reported that McG was to do a remake of Disney’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. As was later revealed it would have been a more intense study of Nemo and less fun than the 1950’s original.

It seems that this planned movie has sunk. According to Variety reporter Michael Fleming, the movie started to run into some issues as early as February of this year. Below is how Variety reported it.

The picture, tentatively scheduled to begin production in February, has been halted indefinitely, and McG is no longer steering the ship.

The studio confirmed that the studio won’t proceed with the film for now, and reps for the director confirmed he has withdrawn. The director will concentrate on other projects that include “Dead Spy Running,” a Warner Bros. drama that Stephen Gaghan is writing. McG is also attached to “Terminator 5,” though that movie is on hold indefinitely as the Terminator franchise works its way through bankruptcy court.

Back in January when doing the early publicity for the movie McG told various websites that he was not only going to base the movie on Jules Vernse’s classic 20,000 Leagues, but also planned to refference many of the SF Writers other classic works such as Mysterious Island.

McG also revealed that his movies version of Nautilus would definitely be influenced by Harper Goff’s design for the iconic submarine, as seen in Disney’s 1954 movie.

It was also widely rumoured that McG had Will Smith in mind for the role of Captain Nemo.

As to what this means for the film as yet remains to be seen. At present it is unknown whether or not Disney will move forward with the project at a later date remains to be seen. So until then 20,000 Leagues is in dry dock.
