Ian’s Roving Editorial: Musings & My Return From Thought Bubble
Written by Ian Cullen on November 24, 2009 – 4:56 pm -
To date 2009 has been a busy year for me with scifipulse.net and many other things relating to both website and radio show, which you can check out at www.blogtalkradio.com/scifipulse or by typing in SciFiPulse as your keyword on iTunes.
I’ve not written anything for the Roving Editorial for a fair few months. So I thought it would be nice to revisit to let you know about some of the things that have been going on in my life as a SciFi and Fantasy fan. First off have got a new wardrobe and have had an extension built onto the basement in which have been living.
Only kidding about the basement and wardrobe.
Like most web-master’s and podcasters out there I’ve been busy networking and doing interviews and features on lots of different things and with many different people. For example before I started to write this late last night. I was interviewing Chase Masterson for a feature we’ll run on the website late tomorrow, and before that I was traveling home from the Thought Bubble comics convention.
This last weekend was a huge occasion for me, and a lot of fun as well as somewhat overwhelming.
As I’ve mentioned in the past. I’m fairly new in the world of comics and at that stage where am still sorting through what I like and dislike about the genre. So my taste in comics is developing.
Last weekend I took the plunge and headed off to my first comics event. A UK event called Thought Bubble, which was in its third year. The big name guests there included Paul Cornell, Frank Quitely, Andy Diggle and many other names from both the UK and US comic book markets.
Martin Conaghn & Alasdair Duncan Of Insomnia Publications
Also there were the folks from Insomnia Publications, which was great because it allowed me the chance to put some faces to some of the people I’ve been in E-mail contact with since the start of the year.
On the Friday night before everything kicked off I spent a lot of time chatting with Cy Dethan writer of Cancertown, and also met Insomnia’s creative director Nic Wilkinson. On the Saturday I got to meet up with Burke And Hare writer Martin Conaghan who you can see in the picture above standing next to a very tall Alasdair Duncan. Sorry guys, I just thought the contrast in height between you both was to comical to pass up.
I also got to chat very briefly with Paul Cornell who generously made my day by gifting me some comics. Included amongst them was issue 12 of Captain Britain and MI13, which was one of the five issues that Royal Mail generously misplaced for me in their latest failed delivery of comics. I have plenty of words to call Royal Mail right now, but none of them are nice. So I won’t bother.
Sadly due to all the stuff going on. I never got to meet Frank Quitely but I’m hoping there will be other opportunities in future.
Ian Sharman sings "I can't get enough of those Alpha God Blues"
Listeners to SFP Radio will be aware that we interviewed Ian Sharman a few weeks back about his new comic book The Alpha Gods. Well Ian was on hand at Thought Bubble and was using his own unique brand of humour to sell comics by busking with his guitar. I even joined in. So I’m crossing my fingers that no one was around with a video camera and avoiding youtube like the plague.
Bryan Talbot who was featured a few weeks back on this very site, and will be the subject of a radio interview on SFP in about two weeks was on hand signing copies of Alice In Sunderland and Grandville, and I have to say that he is an incredibly nice guy who has a lot of interesting things to say. He’s definitely one of those people that I have a lot of time for.
I’d be remiss not to mention Barry and Dave from Geek Syndicate, who I finally got to meet at the event and shared a fair bit of talk time with, and we’ll likely have the dynamic duo of UK based podcasting on a future episode of SFP Radio, where we’ll all laugh about various things in Geek culture.
Summing up I left the convention with a horde of comics and in good spirits after having had a great time. The dealers room was packed and I got to meet some genuinely nice people who shared a common interest, and even taught me about a few comics that I wasn’t aware of.
About the only problem I had at the event was that I couldn’t hear the guest talks very well because of issues with the PA System, but hopefully that is something the event organizers will be able to address next year. Aside from that it was a really well done event with lots of workshops and things going on.
Before closing on this editorial I’d like to inform you of shows coming up at SFP Radio. This Thursday at 10pm we’ll be running an exclusive interview with Chase Masterson who will be talking about her new movie Yesterday Was A Lie. This special Thursday edition of the show will air at 10pm UK time, 2pm PST, 4pm CT and 5pm EST.
Then on Sunday we’ll be hosting a special Star Trek show with the folks behind the internets premier audio Star Trek series Continuing Mission, where the producers and at least one of the actors will be on hand to answer fan questions. So check us out on Sunday 29, November for that show.
Our shows for December are still TBC, but rest assured. We are working hard to bring you some of the best guests from the world of comics and science fiction, and we even have our own unique brand of Christmas show in development for December. So check us out at: www.blogtalkradio/scifipulse and stay tuned for future announcements at that site.
