the-bourne-ultimatum Matt DamonDuring the summer of 2008 we and many other science fiction news sites were bombarded with rumours that Matt Damon was up for the role of Captain Kirk in J.J. Abrams Star Trek rumour, and at the time it was one of those rumours that just wouldn’t seem to go away.

As it turns out like most rumours their was an element of truth to it, but it wasn’t the role of Kirk that Damon was up for. It was the role of Kirks doomed father George Kirk who is killed off in the first ten minutes of the movie. A role which Damon turned down.

In a recent interview for MTV producer/director J.J. Abrams revealed that he’d approached Damon for the role, but was turned down.

“I did [approach Damon], but not for the role of James Kirk. I went to Damon for the role of Kirk’s father, and he declined in the most gracious and understandable and logical of reasons. We lucked out with Chris Hemsworth, and he did a great job.”

In retrospect Abrams feels that Damon not doing the role may have worked out for the best anyway, given that it may have been distracting for the audience having an A list Hollywood actor in a role that ultimately only gets a tad under 10 minutes worth of screen time.

“The decision was made very early on to have actors who were not necessarily the most famous but the most right for the role,” he added.
