Star Trek: The DVDThe holiday season kicked off with “phasers on stun” due to the strong sales and rentals of the J. J. Abrams movie Star Trek on DVD and Blu-ray, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In the United States, Trek sold an estimated 5.7 million discs its first week out, which includes all of North America.  First-week Blu-ray Disc sales were listed at 1.1 million. On the Nielsen Video Scan Blu-ray Disc sales chart, Trek was the easy winner — not surprising, considering that nearly 38 percent of total first-week sales were on Blu-ray.

Last week’s top-selling DVD, Walt Disney’s Up, went down to second place. Warner’s My Sister’s Keeper, debuted at No. 3, while Universal Studios’ Bruno took fourth place. Excitement about the theatrical opening of The Twilight Saga: New Moon sent the original Twilight, released to the home videomarket last March, back up to No. 5 on the sales chart.

Regarding home rentals, Home Media Magazine’s chart found Trek on top followed by last week’s top rental, Sony Picture’s The UglyTruth. Bruno debuted at No. 3, with Up and My Sister’s Keeper at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.  Star Trek comprised 40 percent of all video rentals.

Star Trek led the iTunes sales chart for its first week in release, but has moved to second place following the release of Angels and Demons.

In the United Kingdom, Trek was the number one movie, placing ahead of Michael McIntyre: Hello Wembly and the original Twilight film, according to 25thframe. Trek placed first on nearly every list, but who came in second depended on the site.  For example, SoGlos.com listed Monsters Vs. Aliens in second place. Rental lists also placed the Abrams’ film as the most popular of the week in the U.K.  Specific sales numbers are expected to be released soon.
