December sees the launch of the new Playstation Portable Comic Book Service, and in a recent release Sony officially announced the publishers that will release their comics on Sony’s premier digital platform.

According to the platform holder, 2000 AD is on board to deliver Judge Dredd and Druham Red books. IDW Publishing will distribute Astro Boy, Transformers and Star Trek comics via the digital storefront.

Also joining the party is Marvel Comics, who are the market leaders in comics. Marvel will be pushing Astonishing X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four, Iron Man and The Amazing Spider-Man issues. Also coming onboard are Disney who controversially bought out Marvel earlier this year. Disney will bring comics based on their popular properties to the platform.

Also coming to the PSP is the fairly new and fast growing independent company Insomnia who have released such brilliant titles as Cy Dethans Cancer Town and Martin Conaghans Burke & Hare. Additionally Titan Publishing have also signed up to run digital versions of their popular titles.

At present DC Comics haven’t made known whether or not they intend to throw their hat into the ring.

The new PSP Comics Reader allows folks to read comics in a similar way to how iPhone applications such as Comixology work. Only obviously the PSP has a bigger screen. There will also be an ‘AutoFlow’ feature to guide the reader from cover to cover.

“With AutoFlow all you have to do is hit one button and the camera will float over the page to the next panel, panning and zooming automatically. We also let you move around manually if you want to get up close and personal with your comic,” read a statement from Sony.

At present there is no word about what sort of pricing structure Sony will implement for the new service. Over 500 comics will be available for the platform when it launches in December.
