Over the last few years the Spider-man movies have come under fire for not fulfilling the promise that was set out in the original 2002 movie, which did a modern take on the characters origin story.

Some might say that the movie is suffering from a lack of evolution for the characters and one person that wants to see the characters evolve more in the movie franchise is lead actor Toby Maguire.

Speaking in a recent interview for The Boston Globe Maguire explained his reluctance to return to the role of Peter Parker for the fourth movie.

“It’s not that I was reluctant. For me, it’s a big process to decide whether or not to do a role,” the 34-year-old said.
“I have to want to wake up in the morning and feel like I can’t wait to get to work. I’ve got to feel okay about leaving my kids for 12 or 13 hours a day for five months. It’s a big commitment.”

When talking specifically about the story for the fourth movie. Maguire revealed his hopes for the movie, and his part in it.

“Hopefully I’ll be able to evolve the character in a new direction. He’ll still be Peter Parker, but I hope I can move him forward a bit and take him to a place where there will be new challenges for me as an actor.”

Spider-Man 4 is slated for release on May 5, 2011.
