Black Hole Remake On The Way

In the late 70s and early 80s Disney had a number of experiments with the scifi genre with varying degrees of success. One of which was Tron, which has a sequel on its way from producer/director Joseph Kosinski and Sean Bailey.
However, now it looks like the pairing along with writer Travis Beacham are to team up yet again for a re-imagining of The Black Hole, which was released in 1979 and as I recall got a mediocre reception, but like Tron picked up a cult following when it was released on home video in the 1980s. In its day it was the most expensive feature film that Disney had ever made.
According to a report found at heat vision blog this remake has been on the cards for quite awhile. “Hole” marks one of the first projects to be put into development by new studio chief Rich Ross.
The original movie centred on a group of scientist aboard the USS Palomino who come across a lost ship, the USS Cygnus, hovering outside a black hole. When they board the Cygnus our group of scientist meet a scientist, commanding an army of faceless robots, who explains his crew deserted him as he planned to go through the black hole. After some investigation the scientist learn that these faceless robots are made from the remnants of the USS Cygnus crew, and that the commander of Cygnus has no intention of letting them leave.
At the time Black Hole cost $26 Million to make, which is pocket change by today’s standards. The movie featured an evil robot called Maximilian and two friendlier robots, which were much inspired by the cute and cuddly creations of R2D2. The movie, which was rated PG went some way to putting Disney on the map when it came to FX movies.
At present details of the remake are being kept secret. However, it is known that the newer version is looking to delve more deeply into the science of Black Holes and will include a return for Maximilian.
Brigham Taylor and Casey Wolfe are overseeing for Disney. Matt Smith and Justin Springer are shepherding for Idealogy.
“Hole” puts Bailey, who is making “Hole” via his Idealogy cq’d banner, back on track after seeing his “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” project shelved by Ross shortly after the November reorganization at Disney.
